Our Foundation

St. Mary’s Orthodox School is run by the St. Mary’s Orthodox Syrian Church Society, Kanpur. The Orthodox Church is a part of worldwide Christendom. The indigenous and ancient community of Orthodox Christians traces its origin to the arrival of St. Thomas, one of the disciples of Christ, in A.D. 52.

St. Mary, the Mother of Lord Jesus Christ, is the patron saint of the school.

Growth & Development

St. Mary’s Orthodox School is a well-established institution in Kanpur. The school began its journey with the opening of its Primary Section in 1979.

It received I.C.S.E. affiliation in 1998 and I.S.C. affiliation in 2005. Today, the school has grown into a Senior Secondary School with more than 1,300 students, supported by 70 teaching staff and 40 non-teaching staff members.

Institutional Identity

The school is a minority institution established under the minority rights guaranteed by the Indian Constitution. Christian Educational Institutions form an integral part of the Church’s mission to contribute to the nation’s educational development.

While recognising a special responsibility towards the Christian community, the school serves the entire society without distinction of caste or religion.

Leadership & Governance

The President of the Society is His Holiness Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, the Supreme Head of the Orthodox Church of India.

H.G. Dr. Yuhanon Mar Demetrios, Metropolitan of the Diocese of Delhi, serves as the Vice President.

The Chairman of the School is appointed by the Metropolitan of the Delhi Diocese. The overall administration of the school is vested in the Managing Committee, an elected body constituted by the Church Society and headed by the Chairman.

Recent Milestone

A significant milestone in the school’s growth was achieved on 25th June 2023, when the foundation stone for the new Pre-Primary Wing building was laid.

This marks a dream come true, ensuring exclusive care, attention, and a nurturing environment for the school’s youngest learners.
